Into the Heart of East Africa A 10-Day Safari in Kenya & Tanzania

As someone who has been fortunate enough to travel extensively across the world, few destinations have captivated me quite like East Africa. Kenya and Tanzania offer a rare blend of untamed wilderness, breathtaking landscapes, and the kind of luxury that feels seamlessly woven into nature. For discerning travelers seeking both adventure and indulgence, I would highly recommend the following 10-day itinerary — a journey that captures the very essence of Africa in comfort and style.

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi — Gateway to the Wild

Touching down in Nairobi, Kenya, you’ll be met by your private transfer and whisked away to your luxury city hotel for a restful night. This first evening sets the tone: fine cuisine, perhaps a cocktail overlooking the Nairobi skyline, and the anticipation of what lies ahead.

Day 2: Fly to the legendary plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, a light charter flight leads you to one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. Settle into your ultra-luxury tented camp or lodge — where soaring acacia silhouettes greet you. In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive: lions, elephants, perhaps watching a herd of buffalo amble by. The Mara is famed for its abundant wildlife and dramatic vistas.

Day 3: Full Safari Day in Maasai Mara

Rise early for a dawn game drive when the light is soft and the predators are active. Mid-morning, perhaps enjoy a bush breakfast in the wilderness. The afternoon gives you time to relax by the lodge pool or enjoy a spa treatment, before a late afternoon drive. This rhythm of adventure and indulgence is the hallmark of luxury safari life.

Day 4: Journey to Tanzania — Enter the Serengeti National Park

Today you cross into Tanzania, flying into the vast sweeping plains of the Serengeti. The change in landscape is striking: endless horizon, vast herds, timeless African wilderness. You’ll check into a premium lodge or camp in the heart of the park. Evening game drive or sundowner overlooking the plains.

Day 5: Exploring the Serengeti’s Great Wildlife Drama

A full day in the Serengeti, with morning and afternoon drives. Depending on the time of year, you may witness part of the famed migration, or simply enjoy high densities of predators and plains game. For the luxury traveller: private picnic lunches under a solitary tree, an optional hot-air balloon ride at dawn, or a walking safari with your expert guide.

Day 6: Travel to the Ngorongoro Crater or another nearby reserve

Leaving the Serengeti behind, you cross into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your lodge may be perched on the rim of the crater, offering panoramic views of one of the greatest natural amphitheatres in the world. Afternoon at leisure, perhaps a short walk or sundowner on the rim.

Day 7: Game Drive in Ngorongoro — Big Five & Beyond

Descend into the crater early morning for a half-day game drive. With extraordinary concentrations of wildlife, it’s one of the most productive places in Africa. Expect rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and more — within dramatic volcanic terrain. Afternoon return up to the lodge for relaxation and perhaps a bush dinner under the stars.

Day 8: Transfer to the Amboseli National Park (Kenya) or Coastal Extension

Today you might fly or drive into Amboseli, renowned for its sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro, herds of elephants and wide open plains. The lodge you stay in will cater to the luxury traveller: private veranda, fine dining, and spa.

Day 9: Amboseli Safari & Sundowners

Morning game drive with Kilimanjaro as your backdrop. You may choose a walking safari, or visit a local Maasai village for cultural insight. Afternoon at the lodge enjoying poolside views, sunset cocktails, and the sound of the bush settling in.

Day 10: Return to Nairobi & Departure

After a final early morning safari, you’ll depart Amboseli and return to Nairobi for your onward flight. A final lunch at a refined city venue before saying farewell to East Africa — memories made, stories ready to be re-told.

My Insider Tips

  • Best time to go: June to October for the Great Migration and ideal safari conditions.

  • Packing: Neutral layers, a light jacket for early mornings, strong sun protection, and quality binoculars.

  • Flights: Charter flights between lodges streamline your itinerary — remember luggage limits are often smaller.

  • Health & safety: Consult your travel clinic for recommended vaccines and malaria prophylaxis.

  • Sustainability: We work with lodges that support local communities and conservation.

  • Photography: Ask about lodges with professional camera gear or guided photo safaris.
